Wet Carpet Drying in Broken Arrow, OK
Carpet soaked by a burst pipe, an appliance leak or rain under the door doesn't always have to be thrown out. Clean-water carpet can often be dried in place; the pad underneath usually can't. We test it, tell you straight which is which, and dry the floor properly, anywhere in Broken Arrow.
Wet carpet looks dry on top long before the pad and the floor underneath are. That's why carpet that "dried on its own" so often starts to smell a week later. Broken Arrow Water Damage Restoration handles wet carpet drying and flooded carpet cleanup for homes and businesses in 74011, 74012 and 74014.
What is wet carpet drying? It's extracting water from carpet and pad, deciding which can be saved based on the water category and how long it was wet, and drying the carpet, the subfloor or slab beneath it, and the tack strip and baseboards around it to a measured dry standard.
Carpet Soaked? Do This First
- Stop the water at the fixture, appliance or main valve.
- Stay off soaked carpet near outlets or cords, and switch off the breaker if water is near anything electrical.
- Move furniture off the wet carpet. Put foil or plastic under legs you can't move, so wood stain and metal rust don't transfer.
- Lift rugs and anything stored on the floor.
- Don't use a household vacuum, and don't walk on wet carpet more than you have to; it stretches and can come loose from the tack strip.
- Take photos, then call (918) 739-1874.
Can Your Wet Carpet Be Saved?
The two things that decide it are what kind of water soaked it and how long it stayed wet.
| Situation | Carpet | Pad |
|---|---|---|
| Clean water (burst supply pipe, water heater, ice maker line), caught within a day or two | Often dried in place and re-stretched | Usually replaced; it holds water and is inexpensive to swap |
| Gray water (washer drain, dishwasher discharge, toilet overflow without waste) | Sometimes cleaned and saved if handled quickly; often replaced | Replaced |
| Black water: carpet soaked by sewage or outside floodwater | Removed and disposed of | Removed and disposed of |
| Any carpet that stayed wet for days, smells musty, or has delaminated backing | Usually replaced | Replaced |

Carpet Wet With No Spill?
If carpet keeps getting damp and there's no leak you can see, the water is coming from somewhere hidden: a supply line inside a wall, an AC or water heater leak running under the floor, or a slab leak under the carpet, which is common in Broken Arrow's slab-on-grade homes. Drying the carpet without finding the source just means it gets wet again.
Why Fans and a Shop Vac Aren't Enough
A wet vac pulls water off the top of the carpet but leaves most of it in the pad and the subfloor or slab beneath. Box fans dry the surface, so the carpet feels dry while the pad stays wet against the floor. That trapped moisture is how musty smells and mold under the carpet pad start. The EPA advises drying wet carpet and its backing within 24 to 48 hours, and cleaning and drying the subfloor too.

How We Dry Wet Carpet
- Stop the source and identify the water category.
- Document the wet area and the source.
- Extract. Weighted or truck-mounted extraction pulls far more water out of carpet and pad than any household vacuum.
- Map the moisture. Meters show how far the water spread under the carpet and into the bottom of walls.
- Pull back and remove the pad in the wet area if needed, so the subfloor or slab can dry.
- Float-dry the carpet. Air movers push air under the lifted carpet while dehumidifiers pull moisture out of the room.
- Dry baseboards and the tack strip, removing them if they're swollen.
- Check daily, then reinstall and re-stretch the carpet on new pad once the floor reads dry.
Wet Carpet Questions
How long before wet carpet grows mold?
The EPA advises drying water-damaged materials within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. Wet pad pressed against a slab or subfloor can start growing mold within that window, especially in warm, humid weather, even when the top of the carpet feels dry.
Can I dry wet carpet myself?
A small damp spot from clean water can be blotted and dried with fans and a dehumidifier. Once water soaks a whole room or reaches the pad, a household setup usually can't dry the pad and subfloor in time, and the carpet is likely to smell or grow mold later.
Why does my carpet smell after it got wet?
The smell usually means the pad or the floor underneath stayed wet and bacteria or mold started growing. Cleaning the top won't fix it; the pad usually needs to be replaced and the floor dried.
Does wet carpet pad always need to be replaced?
Usually, yes. Pad soaks up water like a sponge, dries slowly and is inexpensive compared with the carpet, so replacing it is the safer choice. Pad soaked by gray or black water is always replaced.
Will my carpet shrink or come loose after drying?
Carpet that was soaked can relax, ripple or come loose from the tack strip. Once it's dry, it's re-stretched and reattached so it lies flat again.

Carpet Soaked? Don't Let the Pad Sit
Every day wet pad stays down, the chance of saving the carpet drops. Call now and we'll test it, tell you what can stay and dry the floor underneath.
